Exploring Medical Career Paths: Options After 12th

Becoming a doctor or the part of medical field have still been a dream of many students across the globe. Wearing a doctor’s coat, stethoscope around the neck, diagnosing patients and writing prescriptions have smartly captivated our minds. Having said that, choosing a career in the medical field can both be rewarding and a daunting task. It can be sometimes a tough nut to crack, but as a student, it’s becoming impertinent to explore a plethora of options once you have completed your grade XII.   1. MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery): MBBS degree holders become physicians. It’s a 5.5-year course (4.5 years of academic education and 1 year of mandatory internship).   2. BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery): BDS is a 5-year course that focuses on dental health and treatment. Dentists diagnose and treat oral diseases, perform surgeries, and provide preventive care on teeth.
  • BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery): BAMS is a 5.5-year course that combines Ayurvedic medicine and surgery. Graduates can work as Ayurvedic doctors, which is popularly known as alternate medicine field. It has gained a lot of popularity during pandemic time.
  • Career in Allied and Para-Medical Sciences: Allied health professions include a group of healthcare roles which is distinct from fields like dentistry, optometry, medicine, nursing, and pharmacy. They work alongside other healthcare professionals, delivering direct patient care, rehabilitation, treatment, diagnostics, and health improvement interventions. Options available such as Clinical Research Associate, Speech Therapist, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Nutrition & Dietetics, Radiologist etc. To make these careers, the student has to sit for competitive exams like NEET or private exams conducted by a university or institute or simply sail through by clearing the cut-offs.
  • Career in Life Sciences & Research: It includes science research-based careers, which includes the scientific study of living organisms and their life processes. Careers like Biotechnology, Microbiology, Epidemiology, Genetics etc. focus on harnessing biological systems and organisms, studying microorganisms or very small organisms which cannot be seen with the naked eye map diseases and recommending interventions. Time and again, such careers attract students who are looking for something different from conventional medical careers.
  • Career in Agriculture & Food Sciences: Agricultural and food scientists study, analyse, and research commercial farming practices related to animals and plants. Their goal is to enhance sustainability, quality, and productivity on farms and ranches. Career options such as Horticulture, Forestry, Agronomy (study of soil and vegetation), Fisheries, Agricultural Sciences etc. are in huge demand nowadays and these options help you explore unconventional career paths in your life.
